  16. problems; in Ankara. Becoming Prime Minister in 1983 after
  17. three years of military rule, the former engineer forged a
  18. working Turkish capitalism and brought roads and electricity
  19. to the remotest hamlets. A personal friend of George Bush's and
  20. an important ally during the Gulf War, Ozal had remained
  21. influential even after his party was defeated in 1991 and his
  22. longtime rival Suleyman Demirel became Prime Minister.
